Clyne Golf Club’s Neil Roderick proved unstoppable once again, successfully defending his crown at the Welsh Men’s Seniors Closed Championship this week with a stellar final-round score of 70 (-1) in extremely testing conditions, to finish on -3 overall.

Aberdovey Golf Club was proud to see strong representation at the event, with seven of our members teeing it up in the championship. Three players were placed in the top 60 and made it through to the final round cut — a great achievement.

A special congratulations goes to Nigel Chesters, who delivered a superb performance to finish third overall at +5. Nigel also added a great highlight to the tournament with a hole-in-one at the 9th hole. Also finishing high on the leaderboard was Lindsay Parry, who secured a commendable fifth place overall with a score of +10.

Captains’ Charity 2024

Cheque Presented to Meirionnydd Special Riding Group

A fabulous donation of £4,100 has been presented to the Meirionnydd Special Riding Group, thanks to the fundraising efforts of last year’s Aberdovey Golf Club Captains, who chose to support the local charity during their year in office.

The funds were raised through a variety of club events organised by the Captains, with contributions from both club members and visiting golfers. Their commitment to supporting the riding group was evident in the enthusiasm with which they encouraged participation in fundraising activities throughout the year.

Meirionnydd Special Riding Group provides invaluable equestrian therapy and riding experiences for individuals with disabilities, offering physical, emotional, and social benefits. The donation will support the group’s ongoing work, helping maintain facilities, care for the horses, and ensure continued access to riding opportunities for those who benefit from them.

Pictured handing over the cheque at the stables are 2024 Captains, Hil Brunner and Janet Price.

Many thanks to Rob and Tomos for hosting Peter and his crew.

Golf Course of the Year Awards 2024

We were delighted to have recently been shortlisted as one of five finalists for the Wales: Golf Course of the Year Award.

The Golf Course Awards 2024 not only celebrated the achievements of the past year but also emphasized the importance of innovation, inclusivity, and sustainability in golf’s future. The event highlighted how the sport continues to evolve while cherishing its traditions.

The awards event itself took place at the iconic Shard building in London and was hosted by Sky Sports presenter, Nick Dougherty.

“Today is all about recognising, not just golf courses, but golf clubs and golf facilities that are driving progress. There are so many ways to enjoy this game, but it’s important to understand we have a responsibility to advance the sport, to make positive change.“ said Nick.

The Golf Course Awards showcased the outstanding work of Great Britain & Ireland’s most deserving golf courses. The finalist’s event brought together golf courses, judges, partners, and key industry voices, all helping to make that vision a reality.

Whilst Aberdovey unfortunately did not win the award for Wales – it was awarded to Pyle & Kenfig – we were absolutely delighted to have been shortlisted and recognised as one of the top 5 clubs in Wales for the progress we are making across all areas.

We hope to go all the way next year!
